Calculation method and legal scope
How this Ghana capital allowance schedule works
The asset classification determines the rate and method. General business Classes 1 to 3 use reducing balance, while Classes 4 and 5 use the applicable straight-line framework.
The advanced register tracks opening values, current additions, disposal consideration, qualifying repairs, first-year timing and closing tax written-down value for each pool or asset.
Petroleum and mineral operations use specialised schedules. Select the business regime before entering values, and classify each asset from its legal characteristics rather than its accounting label alone.
Other TaxLawGH calculators
Income Tax Act, 2015 (Act 896), as amended, including the Third Schedule.
The programmed method follows the selected statutory asset class or specialised operation.
Additions, disposals, repairs, realisation amounts and closing values remain visible by pool.
The calculator cannot determine an asset's legal class from a description alone; the user must select the correct class.
Frequently asked questions
Using the Ghana Capital Allowance Calculator
Which Ghana capital allowance classes are included?
The general business calculator includes Classes 1 to 5 and also provides specialised modes for petroleum and mineral operations.
Which classes use reducing balance?
General business Classes 1, 2 and 3 use reducing balance in the programmed schedule. Classes 4 and 5 use the applicable straight-line framework.
Can the calculator track disposals and repairs?
Yes. The advanced register can identify disposal consideration, assessable realisation amounts, direct repair deductions, capitalised excess and closing written-down values.
Can I carry the schedule into the next basis period?
Yes. After calculating an advanced register, use the roll-forward control to carry eligible closing values into the next period, then review every new-period input.
Does an accounting asset category always equal its tax class?
No. Select the class from the legal characteristics of the asset and the applicable schedule. An accounting label by itself may not determine the tax treatment.
