Calculation method and legal scope
How this Ghana late-payment calculation works
For late payment, the engine applies the Revenue Administration Act formula: 125% of the applicable Bank of Ghana monetary policy rate, compounded monthly for each month or part of a month during which the tax remains unpaid.
The rate history is selected automatically from the due date entered. Where the monetary policy rate changes during the default, the result shows a period-by-period schedule and applies the verified rate at the start of each statutory monthly period.
The calculation starts from the statutory due date and ends on the payment date entered. A disputed liability, payment allocation, extension or statutory exception can require separate legal analysis.

The result assumes the dates and outstanding-tax amount entered are legally correct.
Frequently asked questions
Using the Ghana Tax Penalty and Interest Calculator
What rate does the Ghana late-payment calculator use?
It uses 125% of the Bank of Ghana monetary policy rate applicable to each statutory monthly period in the default.
What happens when the Bank of Ghana rate changes during the period?
The calculator creates a period-by-period schedule. A verified new rate is applied from the next statutory monthly period boundary after it becomes effective.
Does part of a month count?
Yes. The programmed section 71 calculation counts each month or part of a month during which the tax remains unpaid and compounds monthly.
How is the historical rate selected?
The engine selects it automatically from a controlled history supported by official Bank of Ghana Monetary Policy Committee materials.
Can the calculator decide whether a penalty or interest charge is legally due?
No. It computes the selected charge from the facts entered. Liability, extensions, payment allocation and statutory exceptions may require separate review.
