Calculation method and legal scope
How this Ghana VAT calculation works
The standard VAT computation identifies the taxable value before applying NHIL, GETFund Levy and VAT. A tax-inclusive input is reversed into its constituent amounts instead of treating the entire invoice as the taxable base.
Where Communications Service Tax is selected, CST is calculated first and the CST-inclusive amount becomes the base for VAT, NHIL and GETFund Levy. Tourism Levy remains separately stated.
The calculator does not decide whether a supply is taxable, exempt, zero-rated or relieved. Classify the supply under the governing legislation before selecting the calculation basis.
Other TaxLawGH calculators
Value Added Tax Act, 2025 (Act 1151), including the standard VAT framework used by the calculator.
The NHIL and GETFund levy legislation, as amended, applied to the transaction base shown in the result.
The Communications Service Tax and Tourism Levy are included only when the user confirms that the transaction attracts them.
Every component is returned separately so the taxable base and invoice total can be reconciled.
Frequently asked questions
Using the Ghana VAT Calculator
What taxes does the Ghana VAT calculator show?
It shows VAT, NHIL and GETFund Levy. It can also show Communications Service Tax and Tourism Levy where the transaction legally attracts those charges and the relevant option is selected.
Can I calculate backwards from a VAT-inclusive amount?
Yes. Select tax-inclusive invoice total. The calculator reverses the total into the original transaction value and each applicable tax or levy component.
How is CST handled before VAT?
Where CST applies, the calculator determines CST first. VAT, NHIL and GETFund Levy are then calculated on the CST-inclusive figure.
Does a zero-rated or exempt supply use the standard calculation?
No. Zero-rated, exempt and relief supplies require legal classification. Select no VAT only after confirming that classification for the transaction.
Is VAT withholding the same as ordinary VAT?
No. VAT withholding is a collection mechanism for an appointed withholding agent. Use the withholding calculator when a payer must withhold VAT from a supplier.
